Hi Chamferzone,

So, I was wondering if any of you knowledgeable people would have any tips on getting into the games industry - in this case as someone who is self-taught?

A bit about me: I'm originally from Denmark, but have lived in the US for the last almost 19 years now. I have a background in classical art - illustration/painting, and have for years now studied 3D art - in all its various aspects, by myself, so to speak, putting in a good 40 hours a week, besides 40 hours a week of a job that is completely unrelated to anything artsy. The problem I'm having (I think) is that I am self-taught. I don't have anything 'official' to put down on a resume, and therefore it can look a bit bland. Is that something that is a complete killer, as far as being considered at a studio?
I my case, I would like to work with either making environments, or props, however, my portfolio can look a bit bare, as ArtStation does reduce categories to a small, square image, and that can hurt a bit, as example below.
For instance: a major part of my portfolio is a short film I made in CryEngine, called Scrounger. It was a project in which I wanted to do every aspect of its creation myself - modeling, texturing, materials, lighting, rigging, animation, design, concept, story, and music (as I also have a background playing classical piano, and in composition). I was featured artist on Crytek (a second time) for this, and have been their main page for around 9 months now, but I have to say it has counted for very little. I was also featured artist on 80 Level for this, so I guess I have a bit of accolades, but, as said, it does feel a bit bland putting that down on paper.
The short film was something I wanted to do since I thought it would be an interesting idea showing an environment, which this was - a rather large space station, but again, overall it doesn't look like much, since one should pack everything into categories on ArtStation.
Anyway, if some kind person would have any advice for the self-taught, then it would be greatly appreciated. Marketing myself has never been my strong side, so that part of getting into the industry has been hard.

Hi Henrik, yes that is always the magical question what should be in the portfolio. Usually it all comes down to the more good stuff you have the better aand... an environment scene. :)

I am tempted to merge your thread with this one for the sake of keeping it together, we already talked about that quite a bit in here:

I also certainly agree that it is a good idea to have one good environment scene in your portfolio. The recruiters are always looking for environment artists.

What you did in the past and currently have on your portfolio is great, a lot of studios pick UE4 though so maybe it would be worth to make kickass environment scene in that one.
